Facebook: For Better & For Worse

Facebook has obviously taken over everyone's life, for better and for the worse. Facebook is a way of communicating with family and friends that you haven't been able to associate yourself with. But it also comes with its negatives. It can interfere with your school, your social life amongst many other things. I've realized that Facebook comes with a great deal of drama that I am trying to avoid. I am now going to make sure I get what I need from this social media site. I am trying to cut down on it, knowing that I go on about every five minutes. I must focus on other things in life besides what goes on in cyberspace.

Sex Ed!

Tonight's episode of Glee was all about being "sexy" and sex. They talked about how important it is to know what is behind sex. While watching the show, I was text messaging my fourteen year old cousin, which I find her to be extremely naive. She's the definition of a total tomboy. She mentioned she really enjoyed the song "Do You Want to Touch" by Joan Jett. I thought to myself, she hasn't had sex ed in high school yet, she probably doesn't even know what this song means. So, me being me, I asked her. Her response "I wasn't born yesterday." With her response, I remembered how children are learning things that are way beyond their years. The media has promoted such behaviors. I know that in my hometown, there are 17 year old girls with children as old as 4! This isn't right at all.

"Bon Qui Qui at King Burger" is a comedy sketch from MadTV. I know every word to that rap, but when I think of it, everyone from my hometown does as well. It was once I came to the school that I realized not everyone knows of "ghetto". I grew up in this sort of environment, and to be honest, I'm glad  I did. Although my hometown is not as "ghetto" as this video is, there are people that talk in this matter. Growing up, I lived in a very quiet south suburb, with the majority being white and Hispanic with little African Americans. With that being said, the African Americans did take over with "ebonics". Attending school with students that talked that way helped me grow not only my vocabulary in words I obviously do not need, but it helped me build character. Students that I have come across are very stuck up and don't believe that what goes on in this video really does exist in real life. They aren't willing to understand what it all is, and I feel as if this is an advantage on my part because knowing where it all comes from helps me socialize better now and in my future.

Facebook is Getting a Little Personal

I recently became friends with someone on Facebook that I just met. We were at the same event this weekend and requested each other on Facebook. I was looking at my profile and realized that it said that I was friends with him because we attended the same event. I don't think this should be put out to the public in any ways. I feel as if it is an invasion in my personal life. I don't want people knowing where I was, who I met there. I don't think anyone one. I don't know, I just feel Facebook is getting a little out of hand with everything. It's starting to feel like its going on the Myspace route. I don't want to go through that again.

LEMONS: You Are Special!

Today we had a guest speaker in class, Colin Metcalfe. I found his presentation to be very interesting. He is doing things that I have thought about doing with my life such as being able to show off my creativity in many projects. I thought the concept of GUM and LEMON magazine to be fantastic because I have never seen anything like that. LEMON magazine is so rare, I wanted to have my own copy! It was filled with amazing photography and interesting stories.
I very much enjoyed today's presentation. It got me thinking about not letting people put me down in what I want to do in life. Just like Mister Rodgers said, "You are special!" Don't let others bring you down.

Valentine's/Single Awareness Day

The media puts so much into what many people consider a hallmark holiday. Every where you go, all you see are the colors red, pink and white. There is no way of avoiding it. The flowers, the chocolates, the candies, why is it all necessary? Shouldn't love be displayed everyday of the week and not only on February 14th? It is not that I dislike this specific "holiday" it is just the fact that the media encourages it so much that makes me want to avoid it all together.

Slacking on Posts = Not Good

Stumbleupon.com is currently my favorite website to waste my time on. I come across many things such as delicious dessert recipes to try, quotes, videos, advertising. This time, the Leo Burnett website. I found it so much fun. It is simple and yet interactive. I feel they did a great job as an advertising agency in being creative with their website.

McDonald's McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut

On Tuesday in class, we talked about the things that reminds us of McDonald's and the Apple product. I tied this in with a discussion we had in my Principles of Public Relations class because my professor brought up the scandal that was made when people wanted to "Retire Ronald McDonald" claiming he was the reason why children were becoming obese. This is obviously not the case, Ronald McDonald is not the only thing people come up with when thinking of McDonald's. I found this to be truly interesting because the media was using Ronald McDonald to help bring awareness to the bigger issue, that Mickey D's food can eventually lead to child obesity. Of course, that would mean the child does not do any sort of physical activity, because the way children run around, they can easily burn those calories off. Just sayin' :)

Truly Ironic.

Right after class on Tuesday, as I was walking out of the Student Center, there was a woman outside with a binder saying "I think you should come over here and listen to what I have to say." I found it truly ironic that we had just talked about it in class and then BAM! There she was. I felt bad though because I just walked right by her, not giving her any attention. There were others who ignored her too, but I felt I could have been the bigger person and just heard her out. Oh well, there's always next time.
